It's HiP To Be Square...

Handmade in Peterborough are taking on a new challenge:

Fresh from our involvement in Peterborough's first ever Pop-Up Shop, we're starting a 6 month project, yarn bombing and raising money for 5 Peterborough charities. At the same we'll teach countless people, school children, journalists and passers by the skills to make blankets, cushions, and all other things crochet.

"HiP To Be Square" will see the group selling Granny Squares for £1, people will then choose a charity and donate their square to that charity's blanket.

At Christmas, the charities will be given their blanket and the money raised. Certain charities will get several small blankets to give away to people in need.

HiP are supporting:

Peterborough Citizens Advice Bureau
Peterborough Soup Kitchen
Peterborough and Fenland Rethink
Peterborough Streets
The Green Backyard

The grand scheme will see the 5 blankets popping up in unexpected places over the next 6 months across the city.

Anyone who wants to donate wool, come and help, learn a new skill or just watch the blankets grow over the weekend should keep coming back to this page or check out the facebook group.

Get involved ...

Help! We need as many people as possible on Saturdays in December.

This Saturday we are outside the Town Hall in Peterborough, we are also at St John's Church. Please get in touch if you can help out... or just turn up!

The Story So Far...

How it started:
It's the idea of School Secretary (and possibly Peterborough's fastest crocheter) Rose Croft, who says "I somehow developed a passion (some may say obsession) with yarn craft and more specifically crochet. I wanted a way to get more people doing more new things. So many people spend so much time being bored and I am so passionate about making good use of my time I wanted to get all those bored people excited about something. Everyone has all this time and so many of them waste it when I never have enough hours in the day! So rather than getting angry and posting on Facebook about it, I came up with HiP To Be Square."

6th July: Peterborough Arts Festival Central Park Weekend:
Everything was going well.... till the rain came. We carried on bravely inside the tent but when the water started flowing under our buckets we decided to give up. Still, we managed to make a start on each blanket and raise a few quid.
